High-Gravity Distillation for DMSO Solvent Recovery: A Compact Continuous Distillation Case Study

2026.08.18

High-Gravity Distillation for DMSO Solvent Recovery A Project Case StudyDimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a high-boiling-point, heat-sensitive polar solvent widely used in pharmaceutical synthesis, fine chemicals, and advanced materials manufacturing.

Conventional tall-tower distillation processes suffer from common industry pain points: large footprint, high capital investment, long commissioning cycles, and the need for frequent packing replacement and maintenance.

Our company's proprietary high-gravity rotary distillation technology for solvent recovery and purification is environmentally friendly and provides integrated turnkey solutions for DMSO dehydration and other solvent recovery applications.

Feed Conditions for This Project:

Feed: 20–50% DMSO aqueous solution

Throughput: 50 kg/h

Operating mode: Continuous distillation, compatible with batch distillation

Negative-pressure operation;  DMSO material temperature ≤ 120 °C

Key Performance Indicators:

Recovered DMSO product purity ≥ 99%

Solvent recovery rate: 95%–99%

DMSO residue in distillate water < 0.5% (design value < 0.2%)

Water content in finished DMSO < 1% (design value < 0.5%)

Process Highlights

Compact footprint: The core unit (reboiler, high-gravity machine, condenser, and frame) requires only approximately 6 m² of installation area, replacing a conventional 16-meter-class distillation column.

Two-stage condensation design: The first-stage condenser recovers the vapor, while the second-stage low-temperature water condenser captures the tail gas, effectively reducing solvent volatilization losses.

Rapid startup: Stable operating conditions are reached within 10 minutes; low liquid holdup makes it ideally suited to the heat-sensitive nature of DMSO.

Packing-free structure: The high-gravity machine requires no packing, eliminating packing procurement and replacement costs and reducing downtime for maintenance.

Fully automated PLC/DCS control system, capable of stable operation under negative-pressure conditions of −95 to −90 kPaG.

Utility Consumption (Reflux Ratio = 0.5)

Heat duty: 42 kW; steam consumption: 67 kg/h

Total power consumption: approximately 7 kW (distillation main unit + transfer pumps + vacuum system)

Cooling water supplied for condensation and bearing circulation cooling

Wetted parts are standard-configured with 316L stainless steel; duplex steel or titanium materials are available for highly corrosive conditions.

Capable of recovering and purifying various waste solvents including DMSO, DMF, triethylamine, ethanol, and acetone.
